Honour's Courses 2011

The aim of the Sydney Universities Consortium of Geology and Geophysics (SUCOGG) is to promote co-operative teaching amongst the Sydney metropolitan universities. This co-operation is of particular relevance at the Honours (fourth year) level in that it is at this stage that specialist instruction is appropriately commenced, but individual universities commonly lack the staff resources or sufficient student numbers to allow a full range of topics to be offered. Informal arrangements have existed in Sydney for many years whereby Honours students may cross campuses to attend particular classes, but such interchange has been rare. SUCOGG'S program of Honours course electives is open to all students from member institutions.

Information on the 2011 course electives is given below. Non-excursion electives are normally based on approximately 25 contact hours. The course electives mostly will run in the first semester (March to June), and where possible classes will run on Thursdays and Fridays, normally at the home university of the co-ordinating lecturer. Only those electives that attract a viable enrolment will run, and some may have a maximum permitted enrolment.

SUCOGG encourages post-graduate participation in the course electives, and welcomes inquiries from professional geoscientists interested in attending particular course electives on a fee paying basis as part of their continuing professional education.

How to Enrol

Enrolment by Honours students is done as part of the internal arrangements at their own university. Students should consult with their supervisors and the Honours Co-ordinator at their home University for approval to include a particular course in their program. Students then send an email to the course coordinator(s) to inform then of their intention to follow their course and may also register online (NB: This option is not available in 2011). The coordinator in charge of the course will contact registered students to confirm their official enrollment and give timetabling details.

Contact details of phone, fax number and e-mail address of the co-ordinating lecturer is given in the description of each course elective.

Any general inquiries or suggestions regarding the course electives can be addressed to the Honours Co-ordinator at your home University.
